Ending Homelessness Today — Monthly Wrap
This Week is National HUD Funding Call-In Week!
September 09, 2013
Congress returns from its summer recess today and if you’ve been following the news at all you know they have a lot on their plate. Along with some serious international issues, Congress will of course have to begin considering how it will finalize fiscal year (FY) 2014 funding prior to the beginning of FY 2014 on October 1 (which is just a few weeks away!). Right now, there are no funding (appropriations) bills that have been passed by both chambers (the House has passed two non-controversial appropriations bills for Veterans Affairs funding, among other things, but the Senate has not yet addressed them). This means that both chambers working together have a more or less blank slate to move forward with on negotiations.
Due to the short timeline, it is critically important that we make sure to get the message about the importance of providing sufficient funding for HUD programs across to all Members of Congress. In the whirlwind of activity that is likely to characterize Congress in September, we need to make sure that HUD programs, particularly low-income housing and homelessness programs like the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants, don’t get lost in the shuffle. Any negotiations around federal funding are likely to include big picture considerations, including the debt ceiling and sequestration. As such, it is extremely important to make sure Members know that these programs, which often serve our nation’s most vulnerable and neediest people, CANNOT get overlooked or otherwise lost in the shuffle.
