As you probably already know the Alliance is holding its very popular (it sold out early) National Conference in a couple of weeks. There will be a veterans track, generously sponsored by the Home Depot Foundation. What you may not know is that we will also be holding a veteran preconference session (“pre-con”) as well.

This pre-con session will be focused on partnerships between communities and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). As part of its commitment to the five year plan to end homelessness (Opening Doors), VA has identified community partnerships as a key strategy to ending veteran homelessness.

This pre-con will push this agenda by creating a forum for community providers, regional and national VA officials, and others in the field to have an open dialogue. National and Regional (VISN) VA officials we’ll be speaking, along with speakers from providers like Swords to Plowshares, Friendship Place, and from grassroots organizers like Community Solutions (among others).

During the session, we’re going to talk about where we are in the fight to end veteran homelessness, as well as where we’re headed, and what we need to do. We’re going to showcase what’s working, but we will also identify where more work needs to be done in regards to community partnerships with VA.

You can expect an open discussion between community providers and VA, and a Q&A period as well. This pre-con will give community providers, administrators, local officials, and others an opportunity to directly engage VA and talk about what is happening on the local level.

This session is open to everyone attending the conference and is going to be very informative. Please come and be part of the conversation!
