This Week is National HUD Funding Call-In Week!
September 9, 2013
Last week, the Alliance hosted a webinar with CSH providing a federal funding update for key programs within the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). If you didn’t get a chance to join us, you can watch a recording of the webinar here.
One of the key messages from the webinar was that Congress returns from its summer recess today and if you’ve been following the news at all you know they have a lot on their plate. Along with some serious international issues, Congress will of course have to begin considering how it will finalize fiscal year (FY) 2014 funding prior to the beginning of FY 2014 on October 1 (which is just a few weeks away!). Right now, there are no funding (appropriations) bills that have been passed by both chambers (the House has passed two non-controversial appropriations bills for Veterans Affairs funding, among other things, but the Senate has not yet addressed them). This means that both chambers working together have a more or less blank slate to move forward with on negotiations.
Due to the short timeline, it is critically important that we get the message about the importance of providing sufficient funding for HUD programs across to all Members of Congress. In the whirlwind of activity that is likely to characterize Congress in September, we need to make sure that HUD programs, particularly low-income housing and homelessness programs like the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants, don’t get lost in the shuffle. Any negotiations around federal funding are likely to include big picture considerations, including the debt ceiling and sequestration. As such, it is extremely important to make sure Members know that these programs, which often serve our nation’s most vulnerable and neediest people, CANNOT get overlooked or otherwise lost in the shuffle.
This week, we want you to take action to make sure Members of Congress understand how important HUD programs are to their constituents and in their communities. We’re hosting a National HUD Funding Call-In Week from September 9-13 (this week!) to explain the need for robust funding for HUD before funding decisions are finalized. It is a prime time for you to join the hundreds of others in this country who are reaching out to their Members’ offices to explain the importance of federal funding for their programs and the negative consequences insufficient funding would have on efforts to prevent and end homelessness in their communities.
Call your Senators and Representatives THIS WEEK! We have talking points to help guide your conversation and we can help with anything else you might need! We set a goal of getting 250 calls generated this week – so please, make as many calls as you can! Mobilize others to make calls, too! We look forward to hearing from all of you and surpassing our goal of 250 calls this week!!
This week, we have the opportunity to make sure that those experiencing homelessness aren’t lost in the budgetary shuffle. Call your Members. Tell them that HUD and other homeless assistance programs NEED MORE FUNDING! Let me know who you contacted!
