The Partnership for Strong Communities, in Connecticut, did an excellent job of planning and conducting an effective supportive housing tour with Representative Rob Simmons (R-CT-2nd). They provide a great example of how visiting a local program can strengthen your Member of Congress’ understanding of the need for additional federal resources so that communities can continue making progress towards ending homelessness. Site visits are also a good way to thank Members of Congress who have been supportive of federal policy to prevent and end homelessness.
The tour was designed to inform Rep Simmons of the success of permanent supportive housing as a means of ending homelessness in Connecticut and to strengthen his support of the Ending Long-Term Homelessness Services Initiative (ELHSI). ELHSI, now called The Services for Ending Long-Term Homelessness Act (SELHA H.R. 1471 / S. 709, is a federal initiative to provide funding for services in permanent supportive housing.
On this page, you will find the invitation which explains why the participants wanted the Congressman to visit two specific local programs and a description of a federal policy that was discussed during the visit. You can also link to the meeting agenda which was created to ensure that all activities and information shared were aligned with the goals of the tour. A good agenda will keep everyone and all information on message. Lastly there is a press release that was sent out prior to the tour. Inviting local reporters to your site visit is a great way for you and your Member of Congress to receive positive press attention.
