Today, February 25, the U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development (HUD) released the figures
for each state's allocation of the funds from the
economic recovery act. The American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act provides $1.5 billion for a
Homelessness Prevention Fund for prevention and
re-housing activities. Click here to view your community's
allocation of these funds.
HUD has put together a Recovery
Website with information on the HUD programs
that received funding in the economic recovery act.
The department has also announced state allocations
for several other programs, including the Public
Housing Capital Fund, Community
Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, and
Project Based Rental Assistance program.
SAMHSA Accepting Applications for $11M in Grants for Treatment Services
Last Tuesday, February 24, the Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
announced that it is now accepting applications for
FY2009 grants for the Development of
Comprehensive Drug/Alcohol and Mental Health
Treatment Services for Persons Who are Homeless
program. The program is designed to expand and
strengthen treatment services for homeless people
with substance use and/or mental health disorders.
This
request for applications (RFA) is very similar and
within the
same funding
stream as one issued in 2008 in which SAMHSA
received over 260 applications from organizations and
agencies.
SAMHSA expects to award up to 33 grants totaling as
much as $11 million. Funds are available in both
a "General" category ($6.8 million) and a "Services in
Supportive Housing" category ($4.5 million). Public
and private nonprofit organizations can apply.
Applications are due by April 30.
The Alliance and its partners are optimistic that
additional SAMHSA funds will be made available
through the 2009 Omnibus Appropriations
Bill, assuming it passes as expected. However, we
expect SAMHSA to issue a separate
RFA to distribute those
funds. Watch Alliance Online News for more
information.
