This brief fact sheet provides information on how much the federal government appropriated in fiscal year (FY) 2009 for general homeless assistance programs and for dedicated youth homeless assistance programs. Specifically, it breaks down the total of $4.175 billion in FY 2009 appropriations to federal agencies for homelessness assistance programs. It also lists the FY 2009 appropriations to federal programs dedicated to homeless youth assistance:

• Runaway and Homeless Youth Act Programs - $115 million
• Family Unification Program for foster youth - $20 million
• McKinney-Vento Education for Homeless Children - $65 million

Based on this breakdown, the brief concludes that of the $4.175 billion spent annually on homelessness assistance, HUD receives $3.391 billion (81%), HHS receives $396.95 million (9%), VA receives $109.5 million (3%), and all other federal agencies combined receive $278 million (7%). The brief notes that less than 1 percent ($195 million) is targeted to unaccompanied homeless youth services.
