RHYA Appropriations Sign-On Letter
|
Today is the LAST DAY for Representatives to sign onto a letter being circulated by Representatives Judy Biggert (R-IL) and Danny Davis (D-IL) to support increasing the funding level of the
Runaway and Homeless Youth Act (RHYA) program
to $165 million and the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) program to $140 million. This funding would serve approximately 18,000 additional youth experiencing homelessness with shelter and housing services and provide for over 300,000 additional street outreach contacts and crisis intervention -- potentially alleviating future public expenditures for this population of vulnerable youth.
Youth advocates have until COB today to get their Representatives to sign the "Biggert-Davis" FY 2011 Appropriations Dear Colleague Letter. Click here for a copy of the letter. Please contact LaKesha Pope at the Alliance ( lpope@naeh.org / 202-942-8254) with any questions or concerns and to report any responses you receive. What You Can Do:
- Call the offices of your Representatives and ask to speak to the staff person who works on appropriations for the Department of Health and Human Services. (Congressional office phone numbers can be found by calling the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121.)
- Ask him/her if the office will sign-on to the "Biggert-Davis" letter recommending increased funding in FY2011 for EHCY and RHYA programs.
- Staff can contact Griffin Foster in Rep. Biggert's office or Jill Hunter-Williams in Rep. Davis' office to add the Representative to the letter.

McKinney Appropriations Campaign Update
|
Thank you to everyone who contacted their Members of Congress and asked them to support a funding level of $2.4 billion for McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants in FY 2011. Many of you were successful at getting your Representatives to sign onto the House Congressional Sign-On Letter. We are waiting to receive the final version of the letter, so that we can forward it to you and you can thank those Representatives that signed on. Please keep an eye out for upcoming Advocacy Updates with that information, as well as details about a Senate Sign-On Letter, which is expected to begin circulating shortly.
