Live from the Conference

The Alliance's annual National Conference on Ending Homelessness in Washington, D.C. is on its second of three days. Yesterday, Alliance President Nan Roman kicked off the conference with opening remarks. She discussed the progress of the national movement to end homelessness, emphasizing the success that we have seen and the work that still lies ahead. The opening plenary also marked the official launch of the "100,000 Homes Campaign," which aims to house the 100,000 most vulnerable homeless individuals over the next three years. Attendees have gone to a range of workshops, and Shaun Donovan, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), is expected to make a keynote address today at lunch. Tomorrow, Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki is expected to address participants. For more live updates from the conference, please visit the Alliance blog.

Last week, HUD opened registration for its "Flexible Resources, Data-Driven Solutions: Using HMIS and HEARTH to End Homelessness" conferences in Denver (September 14 to 17) and Atlanta (September 27 to 30). The trainings are being offered free of charge and are targeted toward HPRP and Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG) grant managers, Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) system administrators, and CoC leaders and administrators. Attendees will have a variety of different workshops and breakout sessions to choose from, all focused on the Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing (HEARTH) Act, HMIS, or Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) participation. The deadline for registering for the Denver conference is August 13, and the deadline for the Atlanta conference is August 27.

Last week, the Alliance hosted a webinar entitled "Federal Policy Update Call: Preparing for Capitol Hill Day." The webinar was designed to prepare participants for this week's Capitol Hill Day, during which hundreds of attendees at the Alliance's Annual Conference will meet with their Senators and Representatives. Presenters provided an overview of the Capitol Hill Day Policy Priorities, the latest updates on them, and information on the key targets and specific requests for those policy priorities. Presenters also suggested talking points that could be used in conjunction with each policy priority when meeting with congressional offices. A recording of the webinar and a copy of the PowerPoint presentation used during the webinar are now available on the Alliance website.

On Thursday, June 24, the Alliance's Center for Capacity Building hosted a webinar entitled "Creating a High Performing Rural Continuum, Part II: Increasing Stakeholder Engagement and Strengthening Collaboration." Webinar presenters included Melany Mondello and Scott Tibbits of the Maine Balance of State CoC and Ragan Claypool of the Wood, Seneca, Ottawa, Sandusky (WSOS) CoC in Ohio. This webinar is now available for viewing here.

The Center for American Progress (CAP) recently released a report, "On the Streets: The Federal Response to Gay and Transgender Homeless Youth." Authored by Nico Sifra Quintana, Josh Rosenthal, and Jeff Krehely, it explores the reasons why gay and transgender youth are disproportionately represented among the homeless youth population. Probable causes listed include rejection by parents and violence and/or discrimination in institutions like schools and shelters. These problems are exacerbated by a lack of federal programs and funds available to serve homeless youth and little protection against discrimination for these populations. The CAP authors offer a host of solutions that the Administration should consider in order to solve these issues, including providing better services and programs, expanding housing options, and doing more research on the problem.
