Alliance Launches Youth Site Visit Campaign

On Wednesday, September 15 at 2 p.m. ET, the Alliance will host a webinar to kick off a campaign to encourage Members of Congress to visit local programs serving youth either experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The webinar will include an overview of the campaign, as well as suggested strategies for getting Members of Congress to accept an invitation to visit a program and see first-hand how it affects youth experiencing homelessness in their districts. Presenters will share strategies for making the most of a site visit in order to strengthen a relationship with a congressional office, as well as provide Alliance-created sample tools to help communities ensure site visits are as effective as possible.

Youth providers, local officials, and communities looking to build or strengthen a relationship with their Member of Congress should all join this webinar. After the webinar, the Alliance will work with interested communities individually to strategize about congressional targets and local messages.

The Alliance is currently recruiting two Senior Program and Policy Analysts - one in the area of Youth and one in the area of Health/Behavioral Health. Both analysts will be responsible for analyzing federal policy, advancing the Alliance's agenda, and working with Alliance partners to further key legislation. The Youth Analyst will work specifically on policy and programming for unaccompanied youth, and will focus on the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. The Health/Behavioral Health Analyst will focus on ending homelessness for those homeless individuals with severe disabilities, drug and alcohol addictions, HIV/AIDS, and other chronic conditions. A central focus for this position will be the chronically homeless population. The analysts report to the Vice President for Programs and Policy. To apply for either position, please send a résumé, cover letter, and two writing samples to jobs@naeh.org.

Hate Crimes against the Homeless: America's Growing Tide of Violence, a report released by the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH), states that at least 43 homeless individuals were killed in the past year. These violent attacks appear to have been motivated by hatred or bias specifically aimed at homeless persons, most often middle-aged men. Most of these crimes occurred in Florida and California, but attacks were recorded in 47 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C. More than 1,000 of these attacks have occurred since 1999. Within the report, different incidents of violence are described in more detail and legislation that has come out around the issue is presented and discussed. NCH's recommendations include that homeless status be made a part of the federal hate crimes statute and that awareness training be conducted for those working in law enforcement agencies. The New York Times article on the report is available here.
