HPRP Provides Housing Assistance and Placement for 92,000 in 13 Cities

Today, the Alliance's Homelessness Research Institute (HRI) released its third Quarterly Leadership Council Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) Report, which documents the progress that 13 cities across the country are making in implementing prevention and rapid re-housing programs funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The report, which covers the quarter ending June 30, 2010, shows that over $40 million has been spent to serve approximately 92,000 persons in the reporting cities. This report looks into the types of financial and housing relocation assistance being provided by HPRP programs and shows that rental assistance, case management, and housing search and placement are the types of support that are most frequently provided.

New Video on Using Storytelling in Advocacy Available

Last week, the Alliance released a 15-minute online instructional video on storytelling techniques for advocates. The video features Laura Webb, the Community Engagement Manager at Walden Sierra in Charlotte Hall, MD. Ms. Webb has a great deal of experience in explaining how to use anecdotes to engage key targets, including Members of Congress, local officials, and funders. The video outlines the key components of a compelling advocacy story; it also offers advice on where to look for stories, how to edit stories to fit an organization's needs, and how to incorporate policy issues into storytelling.

Alliance to Host Youth Site Visit Webinar

On Wednesday, September 15 at 2 p.m. ET, the Alliance will host a webinar to kick off a campaign to encourage Members of Congress to visit local programs serving youth either experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The webinar will include an overview of the campaign, as well as suggested strategies for getting Members of Congress to accept an invitation to visit a program. Presenters will share their ideas on how to use a site visit to strengthen a relationship with a congressional office. Youth providers, local officials, and organizations or communities looking to build or strengthen a relationship with their Member of Congress should all join this webinar.

Additional Youth Analyst Position Available with the Alliance

The Alliance has posted an additional opening within its Program and Policy division for a Senior Program and Policy Analyst for Youth and Families. The Analyst will work with other members of the policy team and Alliance partners to analyze, develop, and advance policies related to youth 24 or under who may or may not have children of their own. Those applying should be familiar with the homeless field and relevant research. More information on application procedures and requirements can be found on the Alliance website.

USICH Provides Additional Resources Related To Federal Strategic Plan

The United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (ICH) recently added more supplemental materials related to Opening Doors: Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness on their website. Available documents include a comprehensive bibliography from the plan, a paper by Dennis Culhane, Ph.D. entitled "A Prevention Centered Approach to Homeless Assistance", and an update from USICH that provides additional information on how the Federal Strategic Plan will be implemented. This implementation plan update details who of the three USICH Deputy Directors will be responsible for each of the 52 strategies outlined in Opening Doors.

FUP Vouchers Explained in Upcoming Webinar

On September 15 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. PT, the Homeless Youth Capacity Building Project will be hosting a webinar on using Family Unification Program (FUP) Vouchers as a tool to obtain housing for youth exiting foster care. Speakers in the webinar entitled "Working with Youth Local Housing Authority - FUP Vouchers and More" will be Ruth Ann White from the National Center for Housing and Child Welfare, Susan Paradise from the Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center, and Mary Jo Ramirez from California Family Life Center. The webinar will cover the specifics of accessing and using FUP vouchers and other strategies that can be used to secure housing for transitional aged youth.

Participate in the New NLCHP HPRP Survey

The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty (NLCHP) is conducting a survey on how HUD's Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) is being used in different communities. NLCHP will use the results of the survey to make recommendations on future HUD legislation. The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Questions about the survey can be directed to Jeremy Rosen.
