House and Senate Committees Recommend Increases to McKinney Programs
Today, two big things happened - thanks to YOUR hard work!

First, the House Appropriations Committee released the details of its version of the fiscal year (FY) 2011 spending bill for Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (T-HUD).  That bill included $2.2 billion for HUD's McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants program.  This is actually an increase over the amount proposed by the T-HUD subcommittee ($2.055 billion), and it would represent an 18 percent increase over FY 2010.

Second, the Senate T-HUD Subcommittee marked up its FY 2011 bill, and recommended providing $2.055 billion in FY 2011, a 10 percent increase over FY 2010 -- which would be the largest one-year increase in McKinney funding in about 15 years!

These increases are because of all of the calls, emails, letters, and meetings YOU have made over the last six months.  There is still a lot of work to be done before we get a final number, but you deserve congratulations for the fruits of your labor so far.

Now what can we do?
Call our Senators and Representatives right away! You can find your Congressional office phone numbers by calling the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121.

House
  • Call the housing staffers in your Representatives' offices.  THANK them for providing $2.2 billion and tell them how much this increase will help your community's efforts to prevent and end homelessness.  Tell them you hope they will vote for the bill when it comes to the House floor.
Senate
  • If your Senator sits on the T-HUD Subcommittee, call his/her housing staffer and thank them for providing a 10 percent increase for McKinney programs.  Urge them to work with their colleagues on the Appropriations Committee throughout the rest of the process to provide additional funding.
  • Call the housing staffers in your Senators' offices (non-T-HUD members) and urge them to work with their colleagues on the Appropriations Committee throughout the rest of the process to provide additional funding for McKinney programs.
