Economic Recovery: Congressional Sign-on Letter

Communities have reported increases in homelessness as a result of the recession, and without effective intervention, we are expecting those spikes to continue.  For that reason, many of you have been working with us and our national partners to secure funding for affordable housing and prevention strategies in economic recovery legislation.

The Alliance needs your assistance in getting signatures on a Congressional sign-on letter* to the House Appropriations Committee which Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI) recently began circulating.  The letter calls on Congress to include in final economic recovery legislation: $2 billion in the Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG) Program for preventing and ending homelessness, $10 billion for the National Housing Trust Fund, and $3.6 billion for 400,000 Section 8 vouchers.

* We are expecting a similar letter to begin circulating in the Senate shortly.

What you can do:

  • Please contact House offices this week and ask your Representatives to sign the letter (A closing date for the letter has not been set yet.  It will likely be early next week.)
  • Click here for a copy of the letter.
  • To sign the letter, Congressional staff should contact Andrew Stevens (202-225-4572 / andrew.stevens@mail.house.gov) with Rep. Moore's office.
  • See the "TOOLKIT" above for additonal materials
More Information and Timing:

House Appropriations Chairman, Rep. Obey (D-WI) released a House version of the bill yesterday, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Bill.  It includes $1.5 billion for ESG, but no funding for the National Housing Trust Fund or Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers.  The full Appropriations Committee is expected to mark up the bill as early as Wednesday, January 21.  For that reason, it is important to get signatures on this letter ASAP.  Click here for additional information about the American Recovery and Reinvestment Bill.

Members of Congress to Target
All House Members are important.  Beware: House Appropriations Committee Members may not sign the letter because it is addressed to their committee.  If not, ask them to work to get the funding included in the final bill.
