The President's Budget Proposal called for a 19 percent increase in funding for HUD's McKinney-Vento programs, to $2.381 billion for fiscal year (FY) 2014. However, the President's Budget Proposal is not law, but is meant to guide Congress as it works through the appropriations process. Therefore, we need YOUR help to make this proposal a reality! The House Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Appropriations Subcommittee is currently working on its FY 2014 funding bill for all programs within HUD, including the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants. Unfortunately, largely due to sequestration, the overall spending caps for the appropriations subcommittees are much lower than they have been in previous years, especially in the House. Therefore, funding for McKinney-Vento programs for FY 2014 is particularly at risk.
We have a window of opportunity to ensure that Congress understands the importance of increased funding for the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants program to local communities. Working together, we can let Congress know that increased funding for the Homeless Assistance Grants needs be a priority!
What You Can Do:
Help us send at least 500 letters to Members of Congress by June 30:
1. Send letters to ALL of your Members of Congress RIGHT AWAY! Direct them to the attention of the person who handles housing issues (we can help you find out who that is). You can call the congressional switchboard at 202.224.3121 to be connected to your Members' offices.
2. Ask others to send letters, too!
I. Email colleagues this sample letter and ask them to send letters, too.
II. Forward this email or this sample action alert to your email networks and ask them to send letters to their Members of Congress.
3. Let us know how many letters you send! Email Kate Seif at email@example.com or Julie Klein at firstname.lastname@example.org. This is especially important so we can keep track of our progress toward our goal!
On April 10, the Administration released its FY 2014 Budget Proposal, which included a request for Congress to provide $2.381 billion for HUD's McKinney-Vento programs. Now, Members of Congress are making their own decisions about funding levels for federal programs. We anticipate that the House HUD Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee will mark up its FY 2014 funding bill for all HUD programs as early as next week. Following passage in the Subcommittee, the full House Appropriations Committee will mark up and vote on the legislation. The Senate is currently holding hearings on the President's Budget Proposal and is likely to begin working on and releasing funding bills in the coming weeks. Members of Congress, particularly those in the House, need to hear from us THIS WEEK about working with the HUD Appropriations Subcommittee - so, NOW is the time for action!
