Urge House Members to Sign Section 8 Appropriations Letter |
|
Today, Representatives Nadler (D-NY) and Velazquez (D-NY) began circulating a letter, which they are asking their colleagues to sign, urging Chairman Olver (D-MA) and Ranking Member Latham (R-IA) of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD) to fully fund the Section 8 Tenant-Based and Project-Based Rental Assistance Programs and 200,000 additional tenant-based vouchers in fiscal year (FY) 2010.
Action Needed: Please urge your House Members to sign the letter this week. Offices of those interested in signing the letter must contact John Doty (202-225-5635) with Representative Nadler or Sean Hughes (202-225-2361) with Representative Velázquez by Monday, March 30th at noon ET.
- This type of request typically takes a few days for approval, so please act fast.
- Call the staff person who works on HUD appropriations and follow that up with an email that includes the letter. Click here for a copy of the letter.
- Use the information in the letter and local data to craft your argument. Describe how your community uses Section 8 vouchers to prevent and end homelessness; what you could accomplish with additional vouchers; how many people are on your waiting lists; and how Section 8 programs leverage other services resources.
Please report back to Sarah Kahn (skahn@naeh.org / 202-942-8259) with responses from Congressional staff.

| FY 2010 Appropriations |
| The Budget Committee in both the House and Senate plan to begin consideration of their version of the FY 2010 budget resolution today, with an expectation that they will finalize a budget in their respective chambers next week. A budget resolution is the first step in the annual budget process. It is not signed by the President and does not have the effect of law, but instead acts as a guide for Congress as it passes the annual appropriations bills.
After completing the budget resolution, appropriations subcommittees in both the House and Senate will be charged with writing and passing appropriations bill to provide funding for all federal programs in FY 2010.
The annual budget and appropriations process is in full swing-keep an eye out for additional Congressional "Dear Colleague" letters, including one with regard to HUD's McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants Program. |
