Sam Tsemberis and Derek Douglas to Keynote Alliance Conference

The Alliance is pleased to announce that Sam Tsemberis, CEO of Pathways to Housing, and Derek Douglas, Special Assistant to President Barack Obama, will give keynote addresses at the National Conference on Ending Homelessness. Dr. Tsemberis founded Pathways to Housing in 1992 based on the belief that housing is a basic human right and pioneered the Housing First concept; he will speak on Wednesday, July 14. Mr. Douglas leads work on urban and metropolitan policy issues for the White House Domestic Policy Council; he will speak on Friday, July 15.

Online Conference Registration Closes July 6

Online registration for the National Conference on Ending Homelessness will close on Wednesday, July 6 at midnight ET. To ensure registration availability and a registration rate of $675, please register online before this date. Subject to availability, onsite registration will be available at the conference registration desk for $725.

Senate Appropriations Committee Passes Veterans Affairs Bill
On Thursday, June 30, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed a fiscal year (FY) 2012 Veterans Affairs appropriations bill, containing funding for programs serving homeless veterans within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The bill contained $939 million for programs serving homeless veterans over two years. This funding level includes $224 million for the Grant and Per Diem Program. Both funding levels are the same amount requested by the President in his Budget Request and the same amount passed by the House in early June.

HUD to Host International Webinar on Youth Homelessness

Next Tuesday, July 12, at 3:30 p.m. ET the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will hold a webinar on international models for ending youth homelessness. This webinar is part of a monthly series hosted by the Office of Policy Development and Research at HUD and will offer a perspective on the various efforts made in Canada, Australia, and the United States to address youth homelessness. Nan Roman, President and CEO of the Alliance, will offer welcoming remarks and introductions followed by a panel question and answer session with Narelle Clay, CEO of Southern Youth and Family Services in New South Wales, Australia; Michael Coffey, CEO of YFoundations in New South Wales, Australia; and Bruce Pearce, President of the Canadian Housing and Renewals Association. The webinar will also feature Fred Karnas, Senior Advisor to HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan as a speaker and moderator.
