Senate Moves Forward with Fiscal Year 2012 Appropriations
This week, the Senate is considering legislation that combines three appropriations measures, including the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies (T-HUD) appropriations bill. The legislation is being combined with the Agriculture as well as Commerce, Justice, and Science appropriations bills into what is being called a "minibus" measure. The House has not yet announced plans to further advance its appropriations bills.

House Financial Services Committee Held Hearing on Section 8 Reform
Last Thursday, October 13, the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Insurance, Housing and Community Development held a hearing entitled, "The Section 8 Savings Act of 2011: Proposals to Promote Economic Independence for Assisted Families." The hearing focused on a recently released draft of the Section 8 Savings Act (SESA), which includes a variety of changes to the Section 8 program, including increasing minimum rents. Alliance and CAP Host Webinar on Family Intervention for LGBTQ Youth

On Tuesday, November 8 at 1 p.m. ET, the Alliance will co-host a webinar with the Center for American Progress (CAP) on using family acceptance as a prevention strategy to decrease homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. André Wade, Youth Program and Policy Analyst for the Alliance, and Jeff Krehely, Director of LGBT Research and Communications for the Center for American Progress, will moderate the call. Speakers will include Dr. Caitlin Ryan, Director of the Family Acceptance Project; Theresa Nolan, Director of LGBT Youth Programs of Green Chimneys; and Jenni Gunnell, Director of Social Services LGBTQ Program at SCO Family of Services.

Photography Exhibit Raises Awareness of Homeless and At-Risk Youth

Between October 3 and October 7, Senator Patrick Leahy (VT-D) hosted an exhibit of the HighLow Project in Washington, D.C. to raise awareness of homeless and at-risk youth. The project wass a collaboration between photographer Ned Castle and the Vermont Coalition of Runaway and Homeless Youth Programs. The collection of photographs tells the compelling stories of youth in Vermont based on real "high" and "low" points in the lives of these youths.
