Spotlight On...

Webinar on Family Intervention for Youth

On Thursday, June 14 at 2 p.m. ET, the Alliance will host a webinar entitled, "Family Intervention: Building Relationships and Increasing Stability for Runaway and Homeless Youth." The webinar will discuss the importance of family intervention, practices used to reunify and connect homeless youth with their parents, and the Support to Reunite, Involve, and Value Each Other (STRIVE) model. Presenters will include the Alliance's André Wade; Tania Pryce of Youth Services in Tulsa, OK; and Dr. Norweeta Milburn of the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior.

Hill Update

House Approves VA Appropriations Bill
Last Thursday, May 31, the House approved the fiscal year (FY) 2013 appropriations bill for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The legislation included $1.35 billion for programs targeted toward homeless veterans, including the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, Grant and Per Diem programs, and case management for the joint Department of Housing and Urban Development - VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program. House T-HUD Mark Up This Week
The House Transportation-HUD (T-HUD) Appropriations Subcommittee is scheduled to release and vote on its 2013 funding bill, this Thursday, June 7. The legislation includes funding for a range of affordable housing and homeless assistance programs within HUD. More information is available here.

Senate Back in Session
The Senate is back in session this week, following last week's Memorial Day recess.

Fee for Conference Cancellations Increases Monday, June 11

All cancellations for the 2012 National Conference on Ending Homelessness must be received in writing on or prior to Monday, June 11 in order to only incur the $25 cancellation fee. After that date and up until Wednesday, June 27, a $100 processing fee will be assessed in addition to the $25 cancellation fee. After June 27, no refunds for cancellations will be granted. Please send your cancellations email to Jennifer Olney. The National Conference on Ending Homelessness will be held at the Renaissance Washington DC Hotel on July 16-18, 2012.

Conference Sleeping Rooms

Sleeping rooms at the conference hotel, the Renaissance Washington DC Hotel, are completely full. If you have not yet booked your hotel room for the 2012 National Conference on Ending Homelessness , and would like to be notified when an alternate hotel becomes available, please email D'Arcy Klingle, Director of Meetings and Events. Updated information will also be posted to the hotel portion of the conference website once it is available.

USICH to Release Framework on Ending Youth Homelessness

On June 12 at 1:30 p.m. ET, the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USHICH) meeting, chaired by Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, will be streamed live online to announce a new framework to advance the goal of ending youth homelessness. Leading experts will engage in an interactive discussion on the framework and on the recommendations proposed to achieve this goal. Experts at the meeting will include Nan Roman, President and CEO of the Alliance; Dana Scott, State Coordinator for Homeless Education for the Colorado Department of Education and Vice President of the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth; and Bob Mecum, Executive Director of Lighthouse Youth Services.

Using NSP for Permanent Supportive Housing Development

On Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 2 p.m. ET, HUD will hold a webinar on using Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NPS) grants for the creation of permanent supportive housing. The webinar will contextualize NSP as a viable tool to address both community revitalization and homeless response efforts. It will briefly review some key elements of supportive housing, and participants will hear from NSP grantees that have leveraged the program for these purposes. The webinar is intended for NSP grantees, sub-recipients, and developers, as well as Continuums of Care and other stakeholders. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.
