Amethyst, Inc., in Columbus, Ohio, is a substance use treatment program that seeks to create a safe, supportive, nurturing, and woman-centered environment that encourages trust, bonding, and connection. Their program model focuses on addiction and stresses the significance of poverty in perpetuating drug and alcohol abuse. It was founded in 1984 by a group of recovering women to provide long-term support and safe, affordable housing to women who were in the process of recovering from addiction. Today, Amethyst has 95 permanent and 8 transitional housing units which support over 150 women and their 100 children annually.
