This short fact provides information on how much the federal government appropriated on fiscal year (FY) 2009 on special population affordable housing, rental assistance programs, public housing, and youth housing. Specifically, it provides specific FY 2009 figures for various programs under the following groupings:

  • Specific affordable housing programs dedicated to target populations
  • Tenant‐based rental assistance programs to increase the supply of affordable housing
  • Public housing or project‐based assistance for affordable housing options
  • Federal programs dedicated to housing for homeless youth
  • Federal programs dedicated to youth housing supports that are not targeted or dedicated to unaccompanied homeless youth but may serve homeless youth participants

Based on this data, the brief concludes that of the $44 billion spent on special population affordable housing programs, rental assistance (Sec. 8) programs, public housing, and youth housing each year, less than one‐half of one percent ($68.3 million) is dedicated to homeless youth housing opportunities.
