This is an update on a few small changes on our McKinney appropriations advocacy effort.

What Has Changed:
1. The deadline for Senators to communicate what they believe should be funded through the appropriations process has been extended. It has been extended to May 15 which provides an opportunity to get Senators to support an increase in McKinney funding.

2. Two Senators are circulating a sign-on letter asking for the $1.8 billion for McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants. Your Senator can either send an individual letter in support of this request or can sign this letter. This makes it EASIER for your Senators to support McKinney because two Senators have already taken the lead – Members of Congress tend to like knowing that they are not out on their own in supporting a policy issue.

Which Senators have committed so far?
Senators Reed (D-Rhode Island) and Martinez (R-Florida) are the Senators circulating this letter. Thanks to the work of people in both Rhode Island and Florida who have been working with these offices for the past few years to educate them on the need to increase McKinney.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago already know that Senator Durbin will be signing this letter and the Supportive Housing Network of New York knows that Senator Schumer will be signing.

Please contact Sarah Kahn at the Alliance via email at skahn@naeh.org if you have questions or if you heard feedback from Congressional offices.

Reminder:
Those who are in the districts of House Members on the Appropriations Subcommittee have an additional task – write a letter to your House Member asking him / her to speak with Chairman Olver regarding this increase request for McKinney. If you need the sample letter and talking points, please contact Sarah Kahn at the Alliance via email at skahn@naeh.org.
