NHTF Congressional Sign-On Letter Circulating - Deadline TODAY
|
Just last night, Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) began circulating a sign-on letter to his colleagues in the Senate urging Senate leaders to fund the National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF). The letter urges Senate leaders to include $1.065 billion for the NHTF in the tax cut legislation or other appropriate legislation. Senator Reed is also circulating a similar letter addressed to President Obama.
The deadline for senators to sign onto the letters is 4 pm ET TODAY, December 10.
What You Can Do:
- Call your senators THIS MORNING. Ask to speak to the person who works on housing issues. You can find congressional office phone numbers by calling the congressional office switchboard at 202-224-3121.
- Ask the housing staff member to urge his/her boss to sign onto Senator Reed's letters TODAY. Senate offices should contact James Ahn in Senator Reed's office at james_ahn@reed.senate.gov / 202-224-4642 by 4 pm ET TODAY.
- Report any responses to Kate Seif at cseif@naeh.org / 202-942-8281.
Senators Dodd (D-CT), Kerry (D-MA), Whitehouse (D-RI), and Leahy (D-VT) have already signed onto the letter.
Background The goal of the National Housing Trust Fund, which was authorized in July 2008, is to create 1.5 million units of affordable housing within ten years.
The NHTF is critical for efforts to prevent and end homelessness, as it targets at least 75 percent of the amount used for rental housing to extremely low income households. The majority of the people who enter the homeless system have experienced some sort of crisis that caused them to lose their housing because of the added burden from paying so much of their income for rent.
