The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released a brief explaining the impact that connecting veterans to Social Security Administration (SSA) benefits can have on veteran homelessness. According to the brief, "Connecting Veterans to Social Security Disability Benefits: A Key Component in Ending Veteran Homelessness," providing outreach to veterans about SSA benefits and assisting them with the application process can increase their incomes and housing stability.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) recently released two new reports on utilizing Medicaid for people experiencing homelessness. The first report describes opportunities for states to use Medicaid to support the health and behavioral health services needed by people experiencing chronic homelessness.

Early registration has opened for the Alliance's 2015 National Conference on Ending Family and Youth Homelessness, which will take place at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina from Feb. 19 to 20, 2015, with early check-in on Feb. 18, 2015. The Alliance encourages you to register early to ensure your spot and take advantage of the early rate of $450, which ends on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 3 p.m. ET, when the regular registration rate of $525 per person will begin.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today announced that it would award an additional "surge" of $207 million in funding for a program that serves homeless and at-risk veterans and families. VA had already announced in August that the program, the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, would receive $300 million to serve 115,000 veterans and their families. The additional $207 million in funding will be distributed among organizations in 56 high-need communities.

Over the 2012-2013 school year, 1.3 million school children experienced homelessness as defined by the Department of Education, according to statistics released Monday, Sept. 22. About 230,000 school children's primary nighttime residence was an emergency shelter or an unsheltered location. The vast majority of identified students (75 percent) were living in doubled-up situations. An estimated 76,000 were unaccompanied by family.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development today released the Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for $1.83 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2014 funds for the Continuum of Care (CoC) Program, which funds efforts by nonprofits and state and local governments to end homelessness. The funds are being made available under the FY 2013 - FY 2014 CoC Program Competition. The submission deadline is Thursday, Oct. 30 by 7:59:59 p.m. ET.

On Friday, September 19, at 1:30 pm ET, the Alliance's Homelessness Research Institute will host a webinar on effective strategies for including youth in the upcoming 2015 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count. The webinar, "Prepare for the 2015 Point-in-Time Count: Enumerating Unsheltered Youth," will cover everything from useful planning tactics, guidance from the Department of Housing and Urban Development on conducting reliable unsheltered counts of homeless youth, to PIT count implementation.

The United Nations (UN) Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination today issued a statement calling upon the United States to take corrective action to address laws that effectively criminalize homelessness, which in the U.S. disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minorities.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today announced that data from the 2014 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count show a decline of 33 percent (or 24,837 people) in veteran homelessness since 2010. On one night in January, volunteers conducting the 2014 PIT Count counted a total of 49,933 homeless veterans in America. HUD, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness attribute progress to the widespread adoption of evidence-based practices under the Housing First approach.
