Last Tuesday, August 6, President Obama delivered a speech in Phoenix, AZ, on housing in which he acknowledged the significant progress that we as a country have made in reducing homelessness, particularly among veterans.

As an endorser of the United for Homes campaign to fund the National Housing Trust Fund, the Alliance will be participating in a social media initiative tomorrow. The Alliance has joined with the National Low Income Housing Coalition for this campaign because we believe funding the National Housing Trust Fund will contribute to an end to homelessness.

We have posted presentation materials from the 2013 National Conference on Ending Homelessness workshops on the Alliance website. The materials cover a wide range of issues from the conference, including services for domestic violence survivors, ending youth homelessness, health care reform, new homelessness research, retooling transitional housing programs, family interventions for homeless youth, and much more.

The Alliance is proud to announce that at our 2013 National Conference on Ending Homelessness we will be screening "The Invisible War," a documentary film about sexual trauma in the military from Oscar and Emmy-nominated filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering. As the housing sector makes a steady recovery, 20.6 million households must pay more than half their household income on housing, a record high, according to a new report from the Harvard Research Center. Seven out of ten of those households subsist on annual incomes roughly equivalent to year-round employment at the minimum wage.

The Alliance has submitted comments on a new proposal by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that would change regulations defining chronic homelessness for all of HUD's homeless assistance programs. The proposed definition would introduce a time measurement for an episode of homelessness that would disqualify a significant number of vulnerable people from receiving permanent supportive housing.

On Thursday, May 30, at 4 p.m. ET, Alliance President Nan Roman will moderate a panel discussion on family homelessness at the Welfare Research and Evaluation Conference, which will be streamed live on the conference's webpage. During the panel discussion, federal officials and experts will explore the latest research on family homelessness as well as evidence supporting rapid re-housing.

At that time, the early registration rate of $500 per person will expire, and the registration fee will increase to the regular rate of $550. The Alliance has published workshop track descriptions for the 2013 National Conference on Ending Homelessness, which will take place at the Renaissance Washington DC Hotel this July 22 to 24. The eight tracks will be made up of 80 workshops covering a wide range of topics, including advocacy, youth, veterans, chronic homelessness, families, rapid re-housing, the systems approach, Continuums of Care (CoCs), and the HEARTH Act.
