Talking Medicaid

Changes in Medicaid may be coming to your community sooner than 2014, when all adults up to 133 percent of poverty will be eligible for basic health care coverage.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness encourages best practices to end homelessness, starting with access to appropriate permanent housing. For some homeless families and individuals, permanent housing solutions should offer supports and services to sustain housing stability.

Best practices for chronically homeless individuals include providing access to all necessary health care services, whether medical, psychosocial in nature. The 2010 Affordable Care Act includes significant expansions of Medicaid, the health insurance program for low-income Americans. The Alliance encourages supportive housing providers to explore Medicaid as a strategy, among others, to finance effective services that lead to desirable housing outcomes, as well as health outcomes.

To that end, the Alliance has developed tools and information to help advocates and others better understand Medicaid, and to formulate planning and practice strategies incorporating Medicaid services into permanent supportive housing programs.
